Description

Here is my entry for the cgtalk.com competition "Space Opera." It was done in Photoshop sporadically over a period of 2-3 months, in between work, freelance and life. The painting is based on a loose retelling of the story of King Lear. If you're really a glutton for punishment, you can check out the in-progress work here:

there is some really tough competition out there but yours definately belongs to the favourites.

Makes me wonder what role the woman plays in this story..

Another thing I wonder - why did you decide to make the female char wash out into the background?

Avatar Wysiwyg

 01/14/05 @470

Very dramatic...good luck in the competition, but I don't think you'll need it. Nope, damn fine.

My only crit is that the man with the gun. It seems as though the arm belongs to someone else with the angle you got there.

I dislike the composition, and that's just too much like a poster in my taste. Nice technique though, deserves full marks.

those moons aren't perfect circles by the way, they're bit wonky, just a bit though.

Avatar TOLEDO

 01/14/05 @772

I don't wanna be the nasty bitch here... but there's something in the composition that doesen't work to me. The lower half is unbalanced to the left, and there's too much air in the center. Those two characters in the lower half looks too separated from the center line, where the action flows, and those rockets or spaceships and the city in flames doesen't have the necessary weight to starring the center line.
Grate work anyway, I like it!

This is one of the most amazing compositions I have ever seen.... So full of elements but at the same time so structured... I love it!

Thank you very much for all the comments and feedback! I think there are still a few days before the deadline for this competition, so I might be able to use some of the suggestions here.

Absolute-naut - thanks; it actually was much more saturated until almost the end, when I decided to put a slight sepia wash over the whole thing. It loses some color, but on the whole it seemed to unify everything a little better.

takara - thank you.

DaVo - thank you - I dig your avatar.

tetbautista - thanks for the points!

PeterGrave5 - thank you; it's a simple composition, but as others have pointed out there are still some issues with it.

tregstreet - :)

ANTIFAN - thank you very much sir.

Kyena - the woman is one of three children in the story. I wanted to show the emperor at the depths of his despair and madness. In the story of King Lear, Lear banishes his daughter Cordelia and divides his kingdom between his other daughters Goneril and Regan. Goneril and Regan are revealed to be evil, feeding on their father's legacy for their own gain. Lear realizes at last that Cordelia, the banished daughter, is the one child who has remained loyal to him despite his treatment of her. He reunites with Cordelia just in time to see her die. In my image, the two children in the foreground play the parts of Goneril and Regan, and the ghostly son on top is Cordelia.

v3fusion - thanks, I am flattered.

TJVerhagen - thanks man, it's not all that incredible. Lots of people do this sort of thing better than I do.

ThruMyEyez - thanks!

arbaon - thanks!

blackholes - cool, three thumbs up haha!

Kyena - she fades because I had intended to show more of the planet/cityscape behind her cloak, but got too lazy towards the end. There are a lot of "placeholder" elements still in the painting, but my attention span is definitely at its limit with this one.

Wsiwyg - thanks; yeah the gun hand is one of those last minute additions, so it is a little iffy. I don't know if you saw many of the other entries, but it will be a stiff competition. I don't expect to place, but it was a theme I wanted to try out.

curlyhair - well, it's the thought that counts! Thank you.

PtitBen - hehe, yeah there's no way to thumbnail the whole painting in 64x64 pixels.

spasquini - thank you very much. I struggled for a long time with all those things.

ARTOONATOR- thank you

PeachySticks - thanks Linda!

ultraviolet - thanks, I'm glad it worked like you describe!

dizzi - thakns!

bleys - cool, thanks

kongart - nah, not so much, but thanks!

Crow - yeah, it is a simple composition, but I still fell short in places. With so many elements that I wanted to include, I didn't want to add to my work by using a tricky composition. It might have helped in retrospect though...

bigkate - hehe! I didn't think of that...

eduardobedoya04 - thanks!

Crow - OK now that's just nitpicking. :)

TOLEDO - Not at all. I appreciate the detailed crit. I will certainly take another look at this with your comments and those of others in mind. Thanks.

eremita - thanks, I'm glad it worked for you.

Great picture, the few minor flaws/seggestions have already been mentioned above. However, the only thing distracting me is the Guy in the lower corner assuming holding a gun. Thats fine, my mind gets the pictures unfortunately my eyes are either deluding me or its like 'someone else' aimed a gun at his right arm. -- in other words, its not like he's holding the gun, which i assume was the idea for the eyes :)

overall great work, love that heat/cool compositions with the 'singin/oprah' guy
cheers.

oh right - you mentioned King Lear in your description. I also read through the contest thread which was extremely interesting and educational.
Thanks for the explanation :)

Amazing. I looked at all your sketches, and am well, amazed at how much effort went into this. My only complaint is that some of your sketches (like the one on page 4) actually seem better executed in their composition than the final version. I think somewhere along the way it got to be a little too much about the details. Which is hardly bad, I don't think there are many people who could pull something like this off.

Avatar Crow

 01/15/05 @736

Francis, I know it's nitpicking ;) in tight competitions like that, you gotta be perfect, don't you?

It's a real nitpick though, yeah

hi franchis...this work is fantastic but lower part is little bit james bond cliches.(boring) but the old man's expression and hand work is stunning. I think you have different individualities that affect your works. As a result you have two different personalities..One is an adult artist thinking deeply and shooting bullseyes(like face2) on his works.Other is a child who is a comic fan...))..any way two of them is ok for me (thumbup)

the artwork is absolutley amazing but the guy in the middle kills it for me.

Technically you did a great job but I think movie/theatre poster when I see this and as a consumer I would prefer to see something a bit more menacing there.

Not saying you are trying to sell a movie, it's just how I see it.
